Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce the subject pitch-based carbon fiber excellent in tensile strength and breaking elongation with industrial advantage.

CONSTITUTION: In production of a carbon fiber by using, as the raw material, a mesophase pitch obtained by polymerization of a condensed polycyclic hydrocarbon or a material containing it in the presence of hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride, melt spinning it and then carrying out infusibilization and carbonization, the melt spinning is carried out in a draft ratio (Ve/Vo) within a specified range (shadowed portion in fig. 1) and the carbonization is carried out at a temperature within a range of 800-1400°C.
