PURPOSE: To easily obtain the subject compound in high reaction rate and high selectivity without forming any byproduct by oxidizing an (alkyl)aromatic compound with a new solid cerium (IV) compound as oxidant.
CONSTITUTION: This compound is obtained by contacting an aqueous medium containing 0.2 mol concentration of a cerium (IV) compound composed of cerium (IV), two CH3SO3 groups, (hydr)oxide group and associated hydrated water molecules [pref. e.g. a compound of the formula Ce(CH3SO3)2O.2H2O] with an organic substance selected from aromatic compounds and alkylaromatic compounds (e.g. benzene, toluene). By the way, the above cerium (IV) compound is also a new compound and prepared, preferably, by contact of ceric oxide, ceric carbonate and/or ceric hydroxide with a 0.5-1.3 molar excess amount of methanesulfonic acid in an aqueous solution followed by electrolytic oxidation of the solution at 30-300 mA/cm2 and at 0-100°C.
