Abstract:
PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain a carboxylic acid using less amount of an inorganic acid than that of conventional method without feeding carbon monoxide from the outside by bringing a formic acid ester into contact with an inorganic strong acidic catalyst in a liquid phase in a closed vessel substantially containing no vapor phase.
CONSTITUTION: Production of a carboxylic acid characterized by bringing a formic acid ester into contact with an inorganic strong acidic catalyst in a liquid phase in a closed reaction vessel substantially containing no vapor phase and having ≤10%, preferably ≤5% volume of part of vapor phase in the reaction vessel. Thereby elimination of carbon monoxide out of reaction system can be suppressed and the objective carboxylic acid can efficiently be produced using less amount of inorganic acid than that of a conventional method. Removal of carbon monoxide and danger on operation, etc., which became problems hitherto are also remarkably reduced. When a continuous reactor is used as a reaction style, operational characteristics, productivity, etc., are remarkably improved.
