Abstract:
A process for the preparation of a catalyst suitable for use in the oligomerization of lower olefins to hydrocarbons in the diesel fuel range includes contacting an amorphous, solid catalyst support having cation exchange capacity with transition metal cations to bring about cation exchange of cations on the support by the transition metal cations, to obtain a surface loading of cation exchanged transition metal cations on the surface of the support within the range from 0,04 to 3,8 mu mol transition metal/m<2>. Oligomerization involves contacting the catalyst with olefins at a temperature from 20 DEG C to 400 DEG C, under a pressure from 100 kPa to 14000 kPa. The support may be SiO2-Al2O3, SiO2-B2O3, SiO2-Ga2O3, ZrO2-Al2O3, TiO2-Al2O3, SiO2-Y2O3, SiO2-La2O3, TiO2-Cr2O3, or TiO2-Fe2O3. The metal is preferably Ni, Ru, Co, Rh or Pd.
