PURPOSE: To improve the initial characteristic and to prolong the catalytic activity life by heat-treating a porous body consisting essentially of calcium aluminate at 300W500°C, and then depositing a catalytic component on the carrier to form the titled catalytic body for purifying exhaust gas.
CONSTITUTION: The powder of molten silica, titanium dioxide, a molding assistant, etc., is mixed as aggregate into calcium aluminate as the essential component. The mixture is added with water and kneaded. Then the materials is molded, cured, and aged to form a carrier which is heat-treated at 300W500°C. A platinum group metal is then deposited on the carrier to produce the catalytic body for purifying exhaust gas. Since the platinum group catalyst is deposited on the carrier while the carrier has the largest specific surface and pore volume, the internal pores as well as the surface of the carrier contribute to the reaction when the catalyst is used.
