Title:
PRODUCTION OF CAUSTIC SODA
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3425612
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a production method for caustic soda which uses sodium chloride as a starting material but does not by-produce chlorine.
CONSTITUTION: A soluble nitrate making an insoluble chloride in aqueous solution is allowed to interact with sodium chloride to produce sodium nitrate and an insoluble chloride in an aq. soln. By allowing a metallic copper to react thermochemically with the sodium nitrate, sodium oxide is produced. By allowing hydrogen to react thermochemically with the insoluble chloride, hydrogen chloride is produced. The materials consumed in the series of thermochemical cycles are only sodium chloride, oxygen (air) and hydrogen, and products are only caustic soda (or sodium oxide) and hydrogen chloride (or hydrochloric acid).
