To produce a compound useful as a synthetic raw material for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, etc., by using an easily handleable raw material easily available on an industrial scale.
A chloro-(aminomethyl)pyridine compound of the formula III [excluding 2-chloro-5-(aminomethyl)pyridine] is produced by reacting a chloro-(trichloromethyl) pyridine compound [excluding 2-chloro-5-(trichloromethyl) pyridine] with an amine of the formula II (R1 is H, an alkyl or an aminoalkyl; R2 is H or an alkyl) and hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst (e.g. Raney-nickel) under a hydrogen pressure between normal pressure to 100kg/cm2 at 0-100°C. The amounts of the compound of the formula II and the hydrogenation catalyst are 1-20 times mol and 1-20wt.% based on the compound of the formula I, respectively. The starting raw material of the formula I can be produced in one step by the chlorination of a methylpyridine compound.
