Title:
PRODUCTION OF CHLOROSULFONATED POLYETHYLENE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS6112702
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: A super-high molecular weight polyethylene is chlorinated and chlorosulfonated to give a chlorosulfonated polyethylene which is suitable for producing packings and gaskets, because of its reduced compression set.

CONSTITUTION: In the chlorination and chlorosulfonation of polyethylene dissolved in a solvent, a polyethylene with a molecular weight of more than 1,500,000 is dissolved in solvent such as chloroform or chlorobenzene and usually α,α'-azobisisobutyronitrile is used as a radical initiator to effect reaction with chlorine and sulfur dioxide whereby the objective chlorosulfonated polyethylene is obtained. The objective polymer shows the best rubber properties in its chlorine content of 35W39wt%, further the content of sulfur is desirably 0.7W1.5wt% from the view point of storability.
