PURPOSE: To obtain a coating resin excellent in pigment dispersibility and resin coloration and free from aminic odor by copolymerizing N-vinylformamide with a polymerizable vinyl monomer and optionally subjecting the obtained acrylic resin to alcoholysis or hydrolysis to convert the formamide groups into amino groups.
CONSTITUTION: 0.1-20wt.% N-vinylformamide and 80-99.9wt.% other polymerizable vinyl monomers (e.g. acrylic acid), an organic solvent (e.g. toluene) and a polymerization initiator (e.g. potassium persulfate) are subjected to a polymerization reaction by heating under agitation to obtain an acrylic formamide resin. This resin is optionally subjected to alcoholysis or hydrolysis to convert part or all of the contained formamide groups into amino groups to thereby obtain an acrylic resin. There reactions can take place under acidic or alkaline conditions, and the reaction temperature is 80-150°C. The obtained coating resin is mixed with a cross-linking agent to form a corss-linking coating material or may be used as a lacquer-type coating material without adding any cross-linking agent.
