PURPOSE: To form a color filter having desired patterns by forming a dyeable layer to be colored on a filter forming base material and sticking dyes selectively by an ink jet method to the desired positions on the surface of this layer to be colored, then diffusing the stuck dyes into layer to be dyed.
CONSTITUTION: The dyeable layer 3 to be colored is formed to a prescribed thickness on the surface of the filter base material 1 such as glass base pate and the prescribed dyes 4 are selectively stuck by the ink jet method to the desired positions on the surface of such layer 3 to be colored so that the stuck dyes are diffused into the layer to to be colored. The film thickness of the filter is easily controllable by controlling the thickness of the layer to be colored. The patterns, i.g., color arrangement, of the filter are determined by the positions where the dyes 4 are stuck. The control of the injection position is executable extremely easily with good accuracy with the ink jet method. The color filter having the intricate patterns is thereby formed with the shorter working time and fewer man-hours.
