Abstract:

PURPOSE: To easily obtain a compact of uniform whiskers entwined with one another by heating a filled body contg. prescribed percentages of amorphous silicon nitride powder and Fe, Ni or Co and having a prescribed density in an atmosphere of a nonoxidizing gas.

CONSTITUTION: Amorphous silicon nitride powder is mixed with an additive selected among Fe, Ni, Co and compounds thereof. The amount of the additive is 0.05W10pts.wt. (expressed in terms of metal) per 100pts.wt. powder. The mixture is filled into a crucible of a desired shape at 0.15W1.1g/cm3 density and the filled body is heated in an atmosphere of a nonoxidizing gas.
