PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a raw material for medicine and having tetrahydropyranyl group, etc., at o-position, by rearranging tetrahydropyranyl ether derivative, etc., which is a compound having phenolic hydroxyl group in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A tetrahydropyranyl ether derivative which is a compound having phenolic hydroxyl group or tetrahydrofuranyl ether derivative (e.g. tetrahydropyranyl ether of α-naphthol expressed by formula I) is dissolved in methylene chloride and catalytic amount of boron trifluoride etherate is added to the solution while cooling with ice water and reacted with the above- mentioned derivative for 1hr to provide the compound having tetrahydropyranyl group or tetrahydrofuranyl group (e.g. compound expressed by formula II) at o-position. The Lewis acid is preferably used in an amount of 0.1 equivalent and the reaction condition is preferably at 0°C for 1hr. The aimed product is obtained in mild conditions and good yield.
