PURPOSE: To obtain a high moll. wt. copolymer aqueous solution by copolymerizing a diallylamine compound with an acrylamide compound by a specific method, especially while maintaining the reaction rate of the diallylamine compound having a low polymerization activity at a high level.
CONSTITUTION: An acrylamide compound of formula II (R5 is H, methyl; R6, R7 are H, 1-4C alkyl) (e.g. acrylamide) is continuously added to an aqueous solution containing a diallylamine compound of formula I (R1, R2 are H, methyl; R3, R4 are H, 1-6C alkyl; X- is the anion of an acid) (e.g. diallyldimethylammonium chloride) in a concentration of ≥10wt.% and copolymerized with the diallylamine compound of formula I preferably at 40-90°C for 1-15hrs to provide the objective aqueous solution having a copolymer concentration of ≤20wt.% and having a viscosity of ≥20 ps at 25°C. The copolymerization reaction is preferably carried in the presence of a polymerization initiator in an inert gas atmosphere such as nitrogen gas.
