Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a latex which is excellent in adhesion strength and imparts excellent blistering resistance and other properties to coated paper, by adding a predetermined amount of a specific diphenylethylene to a conjugated diene, an ethylenic carboxylic acid, etc., which are to be emulsion-copolymerized.
CONSTITUTION: 0.1-5 pts.wt. diphenylethylene or a ring-substitution derivative thereof each represented by the formula (wherein Ph is a benzene ring and W, X, Y, and Z each is H, a halogen, a 1-4C alkyl, methoxy, hydroxy, glycidyl, acetyl, or an alkylmercapto) is added to 100 pts.wt. monomer mixture comprising a conjugated diene (e.g. butadiene), an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid (e.g. acrylic, acid), and other copolymerizable monomer (e.g. styrene). The resulting monomer mixture is emulsion-copolymerized to afford a conjugated diene copolymer latex suited for use as, e.g. a binder for pigment-coated paper.
