PURPOSE: To obtain a high-stereoregularity, high-bulk density copolymer in high yield, by synthesizing a complex compound of an unsaturated ester with a Lewis acid and then copolymerizing the complex compound with an olefin, in the copolymerization of an unsaturated ester with an olefin.
CONSTITUTION: A complex compound of an unsaturated ester with a Lewis acid is synthesized by reacting an unsaturated ester (e.g., 3-pentenyl acetate) with an at least equimolar amount of Lewis acid of the formula (wherein R is a hydrocarbyl, M is B, Al, or Sn, m≤1.5, n≥1.5, and X is a halogen) e.g., ethylaluminum dichloride. Then, this complex compound is copolymerized with an olefin (e.g., ethylene) in the presence of a catalyst prepared by combining a catalyst component containing titanium trichloride with an organoaluminum compound (e.g., triethylaluminum) to obtain an unsaturated ester/olefin copolymer.
