PURPOSE: To facilitate the production of cyanoacetic acid from ethylene cyanohydrin with a microorganism, by using a microbial strain belonging to Aerobactor genus, Bacillus genus, Proteus genus, Serratia genus, etc.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene cyanohydrin is converted to cyanoacetic acid by contacting the ethylene cyanohydrin in an aqueous medium with a cultured liquid, cell or treated cell of microorganism belonging to Aerobactor genus, Agrobacterium genus, Alcaligenes genus, Arthrobactor genus, Bacillus genus, Enterbacter genus, Flavobacterium genus, Elebsiella genus, MIcrococcus genus, Proteus genus, Sarcina genus or Serratia genus. After acidifying the reaction liquid, the microbial cells are removed e.g. by filtration, the filtrate is extracted with a solvent and the solvent is removed from the extracted liquid to obtain cyanoacetic acid.
