PURPOSE: To produce a corresponding cyanonaphthalene compound in an industrially advantageous way in high conversion rate and in high selectivity by subjecting a methylnaphthalene to ammoxidation in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A feedstock mixed gas comprising a methylnaphthalene, ammonia and a molecular oxygen-contg. gas is subjected to reaction in the presence of a catalyst to obtain the objective cyanonaphthalene. In this case, it is characteristic that the catalyst to be used contain, as active ingredients, vanadium, an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal, and at least one kind of element selected from antimony, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, cobalt, manganese, tin, phosphorus and bismuth; and the carrier component contain titanium dioxide and/or zirconium oxide.
