PURPOSE: The reaction of an orthocarbonate with a compound bearing hydroxyls produces the titled compound used as a synthetic intermediate of a polymerizable compounds with high safety.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of an orthocarbonate of formula I (R is lower alkyl) with a hydroxyl-containing compound of formula II (A is divalent group of formula III; R1, R2 are H, halogen, alkyl; 1 is 2W4) gives the objective compound of formula IV (R' is lower alkyl). The reaction is carried out in the presence or absence of a solvent such as toluene and in the presence of a catalyst such as p-toluenesulfonic acid. The amount of the compound of formula II is stoichiometric or a little less. The reaction is dealcoholation and the progress of the reaction is detected by measuring the amount of alcohol distilled off.
