To provide the method for producing the cycloalkanol and the cycloalkanone, capable of producing the compounds useful as raw materials for producing monomers for polymers such as nylon in the presence of small amounts of a catalyst, etc., in a high selectivity in a short time without producing by-products, etc., by oxidizing a cycloalkane with molecular oxygen in the presence of the specific catalyst.
This method for producing the cycloalkanol and the cycloalkanone comprises oxidizing (C) a cycloalkane with (D) molecular oxygen in the presence of (A) a ruthenium compound such as the halide, organic acid salt, acetylacetonato complex or triphenylphosphine complex of ruthenium and in the coexistence of (B) an N-hydroxyaromatic acid imide such as N- hydroxyphthalimide or N-hydroxynaphthalimide. Therein, the component A is preferably used in an amount of 0.01-100 (weight) ppm, especially 0.1-10ppm, as the ruthenium metal per the component C.
