Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce a cycloolefin copolymer having a sufficiently high molecular weight by using a very small amount of a catalyst.

CONSTITUTION: A cycloolefin copolymer is produced by copolymerizing a cycloolefin with an α-olefin in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst used should be one comprising a metallocene represented by the general formula: R2MXw (wherein R is a substituted cyclopentadienyl group having at least three 1-20 C hydrocarbon groups; M is a group 4 element; and X is halogeno or 1-8 C alkyl, provided that the two Rs or the two Xs may be the same or different from each other) and an aluminoxane.
