PURPOSE: To produce a cycloolefin polymer which has a low viscosity and excellent mechanical properties and is injection moldable by polymerizing a polycyclic olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising an aluminoxane and a specific metallocene compd.
CONSTITUTION: Based on the total monomers, 0.1-100 wt.% polycyclic olefin [e.g. one of formula I or II (wherein R1 to R4 are each H or a hydrocarbon radical), 0-99.9 wt.% monocyclic olefin (pref. cyclopentene), and 0-99.9 wt.% acyclic 1-olefin (pref. ethylene) are copolymerized at 20-150°C and 0.01-64 bar in the presence of a catalyst comprising an aluminoxane of formula III and/or IV (wherein R13 is a 1-6C alkyl, phenyl, or the like; and (n) is 2-50) and a metallocene compd. of formula V [wherein M1 is Ti, Zr, or the like; R14 and R15 are each H, a halogen, or the like; R16 is fluorenyl; R17 is cyclopentadienyl provided at least one of R16 and R17 has a 1-10C alkyl or the like; and R18 is a group of formula VI or VII (wherein R19 and R20 are each a 6-10C aryl, a 1-10C alkoxy, or the like)].
