Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for pyrethroid based insecticides by making a vinyl compound to react with hexachloroethane in the presence of a radical initiator or a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl compound of formula I (R is alkyl, aralkyl or aryl) is made to react with hexachloroethane in the presence of a radical initiator (e.g. benzoyl peroxide) or a catalyst (e.g. ruthenium complex) in a solvent such as toluene at 80 to 150°C to afford a compound of formula II, which is further made to react with a base to provide the objective cyclopropane compound of formula III.
