Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound having a suitable component composition of isomer in high purity without containing an impurity such as catalyst by using a phosphone-type chelate resin as a catalyst in condensation of phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst.

CONSTITUTION: Phenol (P) and formaldehyde (F) are subjected to a condensation reaction in the presence of a catalyst to produce dihydroxy diphenylmethane. In said process, when a phosphone-type chelate resin expressed by the formula is used as a catalyst, said reaction is carried out under the conditions of 0.01-0.5, especially 0.025-0.10 molar ratio of F/P at 50-90°C, especially at 60-80°C reaction temperature to afford the objective compound having a suitable component composition of isomer as a raw material of epoxy resin, etc., that is, the objective compound, controlled the content of 4,4'-isomer lower than the case using a cationic resin catalyst having a sulfonic acid group, is obtained in high purity without containing an impurity such as catalyst.
