To safely obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for resins and coating materials, alkylating agent or carbonylating agent in high yield using inexpensive raw materials by reaction between allyl alcohol and urea under pressure at a specific temperature.
This compound, diallyl carbonate, is obtained by reaction between allyl alcohol and urea in the presence of a catalyst consisting of at least one kind of metallic simple substance selected from zinc, magnesium, lead, calcium, titanium and tin, or compound thereof (in general, metallic powder, oxide, hydroxide, inorganic salt, carbonate, basic carbonate, organic salt, etc.) at 140-270°C normally under 0-3MPa (gauge pressure) (pref. 0.2-2MPa) normally 0.5-20h. The respective amounts of the catalyst and allyl alcohol to be used are normally 0.0001-10 (pref. 0.001-1)mol and 2-10mol per mol of the urea. The reaction is carried out while removing ammonia formed from the reaction mixture by conducting the reaction under allyl alcohol reflux.
