To obtain a phosphonocarboxylic acid compound useful as a flame retardant finishing agent, etc., by reacting each specific phosphorous acid ester with compound having a carbon-carbon double bond in the presence of a basic catalyst with less byproducts and in a high yield.
This phosphonocarboxylic acid derivative of formula III is obtained by reacting a phosphorous ester of formula I [R1, R2 are each a (a base or bromine-substituted) phenyl or a 1-4C alkyl] with a compound of formula II (X is H or methyl; Y is COOR1, CONH2 cyano or the like), having a carbon-carbon double bond such as acrylamide in the presence of a base catalyst of the formula: MOR1 (M is an alkali metal) and a halogenated divalent metal (e.g.; MgCl2), an oxide (e.g.; CaO) or a hydroxide [e.g.; Ca(OH)2]. Further, it is preferable to use 0.015-0.05 mole base catalyst of the formula; MOR1, 0.003-0.015 mole halogenated divalent metal or 0.02-0.08 mole divalent metal (hydro)oxide.
