PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound by selective halogenation of an oligophenyl at positions of 4 and 4' in methylene chloride or a solvent containing methylene chloride in the presence of a zeolite of L-structure type containing a metal cation.
CONSTITUTION: 4,4'-Dihalogenated oligophenyl is obtained by halogenating an oligophenyl of formula I (X3 is H, Cl, Br, especially H is preferable; R1-R3 are each H, an alkyl (especially methyl), an alkoxy (especially methoxy), F, Cl or Br; (a) is 0 or 1) with a halogenating agent in methylene chloride or a solvent containing methylene chloride in the presence of a zeolite of L- structure type containing a metal cation, so that selective halogenation takes places at positions of 4 and 4'. This method is best one for producing a compound of formula IV by halogenation of a terphenyl of formula III.
