PURPOSE: To produce a diisocyanate by gas-phase phosgenation of an aliphatic diamine having two primary amino groups in the 1,2- or 1,3-position to one another or of cycloaliphatic diamine having two primary amino groups in the 1,2- or 1,3-position to one another.
CONSTITUTION: A diamine and phosgene are heated to about 200 to about 600°C independently. The heated phosgene and diamine are introduced into a cylindrical reaction chamber having no movable member and being maintained at a temperature of about 200 to about 600°C such that a turbulent flow is maintained during the reaction of phosgene and diamine. A gaseous mixture leaving the reaction chamber is cooled with an inert liquid solvent. The solution of a diisocyanate and the inert liquid solvent is collected. The solution is distilled to isolate the produced isocyanate.
