A friction material 20 is compressed in the direction parallel to a face 23 adhesive to a back plate 7 by sliding the side presser frames 12, 12 in the cross direction and is preformed. Fiber 21 blended with the friction material 20 generally tries to change a direction into the direction orthogonal to the direction compressed during forming. Accordingly, fiber 21 is orientated in the orthogonal direction for the adhesive face 23 by compressing the friction material 20 in the direction nearly parallel to the adhesive face 23 allowed to adhere to the back plate 7 in the case of preforming.
