To obtain the subject compound capable of being widely used for fluorescent whitening of materials to be dyed such as a knit or woven fabric, especially made of cotton and polyamide or for the fluorescent whitening of paper by deaminating a specific compound.
A compound of formula II [M' is H, an achromatic cation forming a salt, or a (substituted) phenyl] is reductively deaminated to convert a (substituted) phenyl group M' into a group M to provide the objective compound of formula I [R is H, a 1-5C alkyl, cyano, or a halogen; M is H or achromatic cation forming a salt; (n) is 2]. The compound of formula II is preferably a compound of formula III. The compound of formula II is preferably converted into a diazo compound of formula IV, and, preferably, the degradation of each diazo group is simultaneously carried out to carry out the deamination process.
