PURPOSE: To obtain the title copolymer excellent in reactivity and productivity and useful for an additive for petroleum by polymerizing ethylene and an ester of vinyl alcohol in the absence of a solvent in the presence of a radical forming catalyst and a radical acceptor under a specific condition.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene and an ester of vinyl alcohol are polymerized in the absence of a solvent and an emulsifier and in the presence of a radical forming catalyst such as di-tert. butyl peroxide and/or a mol.wt. adjusting agent such as oxygen and propionaldehyde under pressure of at least 100 MPa, pref., 150-300 MPa at 150-350°C, pref., 270-300°C to produce an ethylene copolymer. In this method, polymn. is performed under the addition of a radical acceptor such as phenol, an aromatic amine or an org. phosphate (use amt is pref. 100-5,000 ppm by wt. of ethylene) to obtain the objective copolymer.
