To produce an ether isocyanate useful as a raw material for producing a polyurethane by a reaction thereof with a material reactive with an isocyanate.
A polyether (poly)amine represented by the formula X-(-R1-O-R2- NH2)n {X is H, NH2 or a group represented by the formula C(R3)4-n; R1, R2 and R3 are each 1-10C alkyl, a 3-24C cycloalkyl, a 7-24C aralkyl or a 6-24C aryl; (n) is 1, 2 or 3} is reacted with phosgene or a compound forming phosgene present in at least a stoichiometric amount based on the number of primary amino groups included in the component under the reactional conditions. The reaction is carried out in a vapor phase under pressure and preferably at a temperature of 100-550°C to provide the objective ether isocyanate, e.g. 2-(2- isocyanatopropoxy)-1-propyl isocyanate.
