Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce the subject ethylene copolymer not dispersed in water unless an auxiliary agent is used and excellent in mechanical characteristics without adding water by polymeirzing ethylene and an oxygen-containing comonomer in a specific ratio and reacting the resulting copolymer with a non-fibrous carbohydrate.

CONSTITUTION: Ethylene in an amount of 65-95 wt.%, pref., 60-93 wt.% and 5-35 wt.%, pref., 7-40 wt.% of an oxygen-containing comonomer (e.g.; acrylic acid) are copolymerized to obtain an ethylene copolymer pref. having a melt index of 2-80 g/10 min and an m.p. of 70-115°C. A non-fibrous carbohydrate (pref., glucose) is added to and compounded with this copolymer is a ratio of 40-60% by wt. of the copolymer and the obtained compd. is extruded from an extruder (head temp. is pref. 95-115°C) to obtain the objective ethylene copolymer molded into a sheet like article suitable for a packing material.
