PURPOSE: To efficiently produce an ethylene polymer which has improved non- Newtonian properties and good film-forming properties, blow moldability, and high-cycle moldability by (co) polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst is prepd. by combining a metal compd. which meets the requirement that the monomer feed compsn. [i.e. the molar ratio (M) of octene-1 to (ethylene+octene-1)] and the product of the enthalpy (ΔH) of crystallization and the m.p. (Tm) of the resulting copolymer satisfy the relation expressed by the formula (e.g. cyclopentadienyltrimethyltitanium), a metal compd. which forms a terminal vinyl group [e.g. ethylenebis (indenyl) dimethylzirconium] and a compd. which can form a complex from the foregoing two compds. (e.g. methylaluminoxane). Ethylene homopolymn. or copolymn, with a 3-2C α-olefin, a cycloolefin, or styrene is conducted in the presence of the catalyst.
