PURPOSE: To produce an expanded product of a desired shape, by extruding and cutting a blend of grain flours with water using an extruder having a specific expanding region provided between the nozzle tip of a die and passage surface of a cutter.
CONSTITUTION: For example, a die plate 1 having plural nozzle holes 4 having, e.g. 100 diameter, is mounted on the tip part of a single screw type extruder and a cylindrical expanding region-forming member 2, made of iron and having an expanding regions 5 with a diameter on the outlet side of 1.1W1.5 times, e.g. 13mm, based on the diameter of the nozzles 4 and a length of 0.5W1.5 times, e.g. 15mm, based on the diameter of the nozzles 4 is mounted on a gap between the front of the die and the passage surface of a cutter with mounting bolts 3 for the above-mentioned member. A blend containing grain flours, e.g. wheat flour or ground corn, as a principal component and water added thereto is charged into an extruded to start expansion simultaneously with the emerging from the nozzles 4. The maximum diameter thereof is regulated by the diameter of the expanding region 5 to advance the blend to the outlet ends of the expanding regions 5. The extruded blend is then cut by a cutter to afford the aimed expanded product, e.g. dog food or snack confectionary in a shape of cylinder or cylindrical form with somewhat expanded or recessed top and bottom of the cylindrical shape or other desired shape and length.
