Abstract:
PURPOSE: To simply synthesize a fatty acid from an aldehyde by using a catalyst in a vapor-phase oxidation method.
CONSTITUTION: An aldehyde and oxygen are brought into contact with a solid catalyst containing at least one metal selected from a group consisting of a platinum group element, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Au in a vapor phase to produce a fatty acid. The fatty acid can be synthesized under a milder condition than the conventional method and operation of separating a catalyst from a reaction product required in liquid-phase reaction is not necessary. Industrially important acetic acid can be synthesized from acetaldehyde.
