PURPOSE: To obtain a fiber reinforced composite member having high strength, by using a metal or a resin to bind a reinforcing fiber bundle which is made highly dense by utilizing a heat-shrinkable tube.
CONSTITUTION: A reinforcing fiber bundle 2 is packed in a heat-shrinkable tube 3. The packing is usually accomplished manually. The tube 3 packed with the bundle 2 is heated to shrink thereby increasing the packing density of the reinforcing fibers 4. The reinforcing fiber bundle having the density higher than the density of the conventional reinforcing fiber packed in a cylindrical case of steel or the like is thus obtd. In the case of binding such reinforcing fiber bundle having high density with a metal, the fiber bundle is loaded as it is in, for example, a case for impregnation, or in a metal mold for casting by high pressure solidification, then the case or the mold is heated to burn off the tube 3. In succession, the above-mentioned case is dipped in molten metal or the molten metal is charged into said metal mold to bind the bundle 2, whereby a composite member 1 is obtd.
