To obtain a fluorinated unsaturated hydrocarbon useful as a raw material for producing substitutes for CFC (fluorocarbons) in the presence of a relatively small amount of a catalyst in a high yield by subjecting a chlorofluorocarbon to a reaction for removing chlorine and fluorine atoms in the presence of a metal and an organic carboxylic acid.
This method for producing a fluorinated unsaturated hydrocarbon having a CF=CF bond comprises subjecting (A) a chlorofluorocarbon having a CClF-CF2 bond (for example, a cyclic chlorofluorocarbon) to a chlorine and fluorine atom-removing reaction in the presence of (B) a powdery metal having a reducing action, preferably at least one kind of metal selected from zinc, magnesium, aluminum and iron and (C) an organic carboxylic acid. The chlorine and fluorine atom-removing reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a noble metal catalyst, a hydrocarbon solvent, hydrogen and further an alkali(ne earth) metal salt.
