PURPOSE: To obtain a friction material having a specific pore rate and useful for the brake linings of four-wheel vehicles, two-wheel vehicles, etc., by adjusting the volume of a mold and the amount of a molding material, press-molding the raw material, and heating the molding.
CONSTITUTION: When a molding is produced with a heat-press machine, support bars 6 each having a desired length are arranged on an upper mold 3 so that a molding raw material-receiving volumetric section 5 surrounded by an intermediate mold 1, a lower mold 2 and a punch 4 attached to the upper mold 3 gives a desired volume, thereby permitting to arbitrarily control the pore rate of the molding in response to the amount of the raw material charged. The charged raw material is press-molded and heated to give the objective friction material having a pore rate of 3-20%.
