To make it possible to obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for vitamin A with a small amount by-product at a low cost, by haloalkoxylating a 1-alkoxy-2-methyl-1,3-butadiene with a specific halogenating agent and then hydrolyzing the resultant compound.
(A) A compound represented by formula I (R1 is a 1-4C alkyl) is haloalkoxylated with (B) a halogenating agent which is a hypochlorite or a hypobromite of an alkali(ne earth) metal, t-butyl hydrochlorite, N- bromoacetamide, 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin or 1,3-dibromo-5,5- dimethylhydantoin in (C) an alcohol represented by the formula R2OH (R2 is R1) to provide a compound represented by formula II (Hal is chorine or bromine), which is then hydrolyzed with sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc., to afford a compound represented by formula III.
