To obtain a vitreous powder without mixing of impurities by passing a gel block of metal alkoxide through a deformable cylinder and pressing the cylinder from the outside to pulverize the gel.
A metal alkoxide is gelled by a solgel method. The obtd. gel block is passed through a cylinder which can be deformed while the cylinder is pressed from the outside to pulverize the gel. Then the pulverized gel is dried and heated to remove pores to obtain a vitreous powder. The obtd. vitreous powder is fused to produce a glass formed body. When the cylinder is pressed from the outside in the process of pulverizing the gel block, for example, a pressing means comprising a plate 2 which presses the cylinder 1 in one direction, a driving device 3 and a connecting shaft 4 to connect these is used. The pulverized gel is further finely pulverized if necessary. Plural numbers of the pressing means to press the cylinder from the outside can be used. The cylinder 1 consists of a rubber, synthetic resin, etc.
