PURPOSE: To obtain a CMC gel which is free from syneresis and has a high gel strength.

CONSTITUTION: A gel is produced by reacting a sodium salt of carboxymethylcellulose (hereunder referred to as CMC) with a salt of a di- or trivalent metal under such condition that the CMC comprises 80-95wt.% at least one CMC with a degree of etherification of 0.3-0.8 and a viscosity of the 1% aqueous soln. thereof of 10-40,000mPa.s and 5-20wt.% at least one CMC with a degree of etherification of 0.8-2.5 and a viscosity of the 1% water soln. thereof of 10-20,000mPa.s.
