PURPOSE: To obtain the title globular silica having large grain diameter and uniform grain size by keeping a soln. of water and a basic catalyst in a reaction solvent under specified conditions, adding the whole amt. of tetraalkoxysilane at a time to cause reaction, and repeating the reaction with the obtained silica particle as a seed crystal.
CONSTITUTION: Water and a basic catalyst (e.g., aq. ammonia) are dissolved in a reaction solvent such as refined methanol, the whole amt. of tetraalkoxysilane is added at a time to obtain a reaction system contg. 1W20mol./l water, 0.1W10mol./l catalyst, and 0.01W1mol./l tetraalkoxysilane. The system is kept at -20W40°C in a thermostatic bath while being agitated, and hydrolysis and polymerization are carried out to form silica particles. The silica particles are used as the seed crystals preferably at ≥1011 unit/cm3 per unit volume of the reaction solvent and at ≥103cm2/cm3 surface area of seed crystals, tetraalkoxysilane is added to the liq. reactant under the above- mentioned conditions, a growth reaction is carried out, and the process is repeated.
