PURPOSE: To keep the grain size of granular iron to a prescribed range by adjusting spraying speed of primary cooling water according to the sulfur content of molten iron and holding the temp. of secondary cooling water to a specific temp. or lower, at the time of producing the granular iron by solidifying with the secondary cooling water after dispersing by spraying the primary cooling water on the molten iron flow.
CONSTITUTION: At the time of flowing the molten iron into a pit 4 for the secondary cooling water by flowing down the molten iron in a torpedo car 1 with a flow-down trough 2, the primary cooling water from a nozzle 3 for the primary cooling water is sprayed on the molten iron, and the molten iron is dispersed and granulated. In this case, the spraying speed of the primary cooling water sprayed on the molten iron according to the sulfur content in the molten iron is adjusted to a suitable speed. Further, the temp. of the secondary cooling water in the pit 4 is held to ≤68°C as well, thereby, the dispersed and granulated molten iron by spraying the primary cooling water is solidified as the granular iron having the prescribed grain size without forming the large massive state due to mutual melt-sticking, and the granular iron is taken out of the pit 4 with a conveyor 6 for carrying the granular iron in a good yield.
