PURPOSE: To obtain the graphite molding which has the desired shape to allow utilization over a wide range by the relatively easy process of a simple operation and is light in weight and porous by putting an expansive graphite raw material into a form consisting of an air permeable material and heat-treating the same in this form.
CONSTITUTION: The expansive graphite raw material or the mixture composed of the expansive graphite raw material and expansive graphite is put into the form consisting of the air permeable material and is heat-treated in this form to change the expansive graphite raw material to the expansive graphite by which the expansive graphite molding having the desired shape is obtd. The resulted expensive graphite molding is impregnated with a resin and is heat- treated to cure the resin or after the molding is subjected to an infusibilization treatment, the molding is carbonized by heating at 800-3,000°C in an inert gaseous atmosphere, by which the graphite/carbonaceous molding is produced. The expansive graphite raw material to be used is preferably the interlayer compd. formed by treating the particles of graphite such as natural flake graphite, kish graphite and pyrolysis graphite having developed crystallinity with mixed acids of sulfuric acid, nitric acid, etc.
