Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a halogen-containing copolymer useful as a compatibilizing agent for polymer alloy, having excellent flame-retardance, polymer modifying properties, etc., by introducing a halogen group to an unsaturated copolymer of an alpha-olefin and a specific cyclic olefin. CONSTITUTION:(A) An unsaturated copolymer is obtained by copolymerizing A1: 3-12C, preferably 3-8C alpha-olefin (preferably 1-butene) with A2: 0.05-50mol%, preferably 0.1-30mol% cyclic olefin of the formula (R<1> is 2-5C alkylidene or 2-5C alkenyl group; R<2> is 1-5C hydrocarbon group; (n) is 0, 1 or 2) by using a catalyst comprising a specific transition metal compound and alumoxane. (B) The unsaturated copolymer obtained by the process A is reacted with a halogen (preferably bromine or bromine monochloride) or a hydrogen halide (preferably hydrogen bromide) and the halogen group is introduced to >=30%, preferably >=40%, especially >=50% of the olefinically unsaturated bond in the copolymer to give the objective halogen-containing copolymer.
