PURPOSE: To obtain a halogenophenoxy fatty acid derivative (some of which are new compounds) useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, pesticides, chemicals, etc., in high yield without using catalyst, etc., by halogenating a specific phenoxy fatty acid with a halogenation agent.
CONSTITUTION: A halogenophenoxy fatty acid derivative of formula II (Y is halogen) (some of which are new compounds), e.g. 2-chloro-4- fluorophenoxyacetonitrile, can be produced by selectively halogenating a phenoxy fatty acid of formula I [R is cyano, CON(R3)R4 (R3 and R4 are H, alkyl, phenyl or benzyl or R3 and R4 together form alkylene) or COAR5 (R5 is H, alkyl, phenyl or benzyl; A is 0 or S); R1 and R2 are H or alkyl; X is halogen or alkyl] in the presence of a halogenation agent (especially preferably chlorination agent). In the compounds of formula II, the compounds of formula III shown in the table are new compounds.
