PURPOSE: To obtain in an industrially advantageous way the title compound useful as a raw material for pesticides, medicines and electronic industrial parts by reaction of a monohalogenobenzene with sulfur monochloride in a solvent in the presence of a catalyst followed by reduction.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A monohalogenobenzene is made to react, (B) in a solvent like ethyl acetate or without using any solvent, (C) in the presence of a catalyst (pref. zinc chloride), with (D) sulfur monochloride at 50-110°C for 3-7hr to prepare a compound of formula I (x is Cl or Br; y is an integer: ≥2), which is then reduced with a reducing agent like zinc powder, thus affording the objective compound of formula II. This compound is e.g. a mixture of 2-chlorothiophenol and 4-chlorothiophenol. From this mixture, the 4-chlorothiophenol is recrystallized using water or a water-soluble organic solvent or their mixture and purified.
