To obtain a halohydrin derivative useful as an intermediate for medicines such as retinol, by reaction of a specific halohydrin derivative with a specific carboxylic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst.
This halohydrin derivative of formula III (R4 is an acyl) is obtained by reaction of (A) a halohydrin derivative of formula I (R1 is H or an acyl; R2 is H or a hydroxyl-protective group; X is a halogen) in the presence of (B) an acid catalyst (pref. a sulfonic acid or strongly acidic ion exchange resin) with (C) a carboxylic acid of formula II (R3 is H, a (halogen-substituted) 1-5C straight-chain or branched alkyl or the like) (pref. acetic acid); wherein the stock compound may be a mixture of the component A and a halohydrin derivative of formula IV.
