PURPOSE: To chemically and readily obtain the title compound useful as an antimicrobial agent, antitumor agent, arterialization inhibitor, etc., by oxidizing hydroquinone part of the antibiotic NK86-0085 from the antibiotic to paraquinone type.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroquinone part of the compound NK86-0084 expressed by formula I is oxidized normally using chromic acids under ice cooling e.g. at 0W35°C to provide the aimed compound expressed by formula II. Proceeding of the above-mentioned reaction can be observed by analytical method such as silica gel thin layer chromatography. Isolation of herbimycin A from reaction liquid is carried out e.g. by solvent extraction, cleaning or column chromatography. Furthermore, a compound expressed by formula I which is a raw material is obtained by culturing NK86-0084 producing bacterium belonging to the genus Streptomyces [e.g. Streptomyces NK86-0084 (FERM P-9432)], producing and accumulating the compound expressed by formula I and liberating the cultivated product.
