Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain extremely high-purity 1,4-butanediol without distillation loss by treating crude 1,4-butanediol-with a solid acid catalyst followed by distillation.
SOLUTION: (A) Crude 1,4-butanediol obtained by hydrogenolysis of a dialkyl maleate is treated with (B) a solid acid catalyst to make acetals (pref. 2- hydroxytetrahydrofuran) as impurities in the component A react with an alkyl alcohol followed by separating the impurities through distillation of the product. The component B is pref. at least one kind of catalyst selected from cation exchange resins, zeolite, silica-alumina, alumina, heteropoly-acids and montmorillonite.
